Buratino & Pinocchio

So, you all know the 1880’s classic children’s story of the long-nosed wooden puppet, Pinocchio, written by Italian author Carlo Collodi. Brief recap: Geppetto carves a marionette out of a piece of wood and claims it as his child; it is clear from the beginning that this puppet, named Pinocchio, is a rascal. He is sent to school, but is easily led off-track by a variety of distractions, such as a marionette theatre (& its director, Mangiafuoco), as well as the conniving duo Fox & Cat. He is helped out of several tight situations by the Fairy with Turquoise Hair as well as The Talking Cricket who reappears at conspicuous times throughout the story (Famous Scene: when the Fairy asks Pinocchio about his adventures, his nose begins to grow as he relates to her a string of lies. The Fairy tells him: “Lies, my boy, are easily recognised because there are two kinds: There are lies with short legs and lies with long noses: Yours, to the point, are the kind with the long nose.”). The Fairy repeatedly warns Pinocchio about the consequences of reckless behavior; nevertheless, he continues to get lured to places such as the City of Catchfools and the Land of Play, where he gets himself in a variety of fixes (like being transformed into a donkey). Ultimately, Pinocchio ends up saving Geppetto from the belly of The Terrible Dogfish after he’s been swallowed; father and son are reunited after a long separation. One day, as Pinocchio is on his way to town to buy himself a new suit, he is met by a snail who tells him that the Fairy with Turquoise Hair is sick; Pinocchio immediately gives the snail all of the money he has (forty copper coins), and that night, while he is sleeping, he is transformed into a real boy. Furthermore, when he wakes up, he has a new suit and is shocked to find forty gold coins by his bed, attributed to the Fairy as a reward for Pinocchio’s commendable actions.

I myself grew up with Pinocchio’s Russian counterpart: Buratino. In the 1930’s, Russian author Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy reimagined Collodi’s masterpiece. Although Tolstoy had read about the original adventures of Pinocchio a long time before, he had lost the book and forgotten many of the details. In an attempt to come up with an entertaining bedside story for his own children, Tolstoy came up with the tale of the long-nosed wooden puppet, Buratino. There are many similarities between the two stories, but also marked differences.

Buratino is carved by a man named Papa Carlo (probably in reference to the author of Pinocchio). His nose is always long; he resists attempts to have it shortened. When Buratino (which means “wooden doll” in Italian) is sent off to school, he is distracted by a marionette theatre, which is run by the evil, long-bearded director Karabas Barabas. Buratino disrupts the show and befriends Karabas’s mistreated puppets (including a blue-haired puppet named Malvina). For this, Karabas is livid and imprisons him; however, he politely releases Buratino when he accidentally discovers, by means of conversation, that the old house Buratino’s father Papa Carlo lives in contains a secret door for which Karabas has been searching his whole life. Karabas once had the Golden Key to this door, but he lost it. The rest of the book chronicles Buratino’s adventures searching for the Golden Key. Throughout, Alice the Fox & Basilio the Cat attempt to swindle Buratino out of his pocket money using a variety of ploys (such as taking him to the Land of Fools). Meanwhile, Karabas’s puppet crew have run away from their evil director, and they help Buratino out of a fix (far from town in a place of great seclusion, Malvina the Blue-Haired marionette attempts to educate Buratino in reading, writing, and arithmetic, with little success). After a few more adventures, ultimately, Buratino is given the Golden Key by a wise old pond turtle named Tortilla, who deems him “worthy” of the honor. Turns out the Golden Key leads to a wonderful, ornate marionette theatre; there Papa Carlo, Buratino & the rest of his puppet friends happily spend the rest of their days. In this story, there is also a Talking Cricket – he lives in Papa Carlo’s house at the entrance to the secret theatre. However, in this version, the wooden puppet Buratino never becomes a “real boy.”

Isn’t it interesting how one character can serve as a bridge between cultures (namely Western Europeans & Slavs)? Buratino is considered a very popular Russian icon today. There is even a fizzy drink named after him :)

Britney Spears - Circus (Review)

The cover of the Circus album reveals a number of disturbing truths that no amount of photoshopping can conceal. Britney’s eyes are vacuous and glaring into a camera, deadened from a combination of the various mental illnesses festering inside her noticeably large head, and the endless supply of medication she is force-fed for breakfast. Britney looks every bit as corpse-like as she did in her Blackout era. The difference is that the producers have painted her skin purple, pink and gold in hopes of increasing her marketability.

Spears' inner turmoil unintentionally makes a cameo for the cover-art of this abysmal album.

2007 was no walk in the park for our B-girl (the rumoured title of her forthcoming album. Sounds too bad to be true.). Her penchant for divorce, custody battles, and late-night drives down misery lane all contributed to the tragedy the world watched unfold through the unscrupulous media in early 2008. Now that it has been revealed that her conservatorship has been extended, Britney’s carefully hidden but ever-present sorrow, which makes its presence know every now and then through weeping fits and dangerous acts of impulsivity, seems as deeply wedged into the singers true identity (not to be confused with the club-happy nymphomanic persona we see in her videos) as it has ever been.

Such is the current image of the blonde tabloid queen. She frequently appears in newspaper columns and on music channels, yet she is rarely present in person either physically or mentally. Fortunately, the tabloids are soothing Spears rather than stoning her ever since 2008. Since being sectioned, Spears has been placed under conservatorship, which as I mentioned above, has been extended. All is not as well as Circus would have you believe.

But, not to worry. Image must always be separated from the actual music. After all, 2007 saw the release of Spears’ pop masterpiece, and her greatest album, Blackout. The singer was depressed, lonely and completely unhinged during the production of the album, yet it emerged as a grand and highly underappreciated triumph. Perhaps this adds fuel to the myth that an artists’ greatest work is created when they are in their lowest spirits.

Too bad that Circus doesn’t quite match up to its predecessor. The production is bland and never expands into anything interesting. The second song on the album, Out From Under, is a cover of a Bratz song, as every bit as whiny and insincere sounding as its source. Womanizer attempts to replicate the dark sounding production present in Blackout and fails, as does Kill The Lights. Circus, If U Seek Amy (clever, Max! sigh) and Shattered Glass fulfill their roles as generic pop garbage that weary sensible listeners after a few scant plays. Mmm Papi sounds like a seven-year old girl got a tape-recorder for her birthday, and sang along to the sound of traffic. My Baby will make you cry. At first you will assume the song is shooting for irony, but the realization that this track was written by Britney herself will inflate some balloons for a pity party. The best song on the album was taken from her previous album, Blackout, and tacked on at the end for contract reasons. Go figure.

Unusual You is a highlight, however, though hardly a masterpiece, and certainly not enough to redeem an album that is every bit as dull and lifeless as the situation of its struggling vocalist. The singer also embarked on a world tour to support the album, which is every bit as banal and supportive of my observations as this album. She may not be writing the songs, but Britney seems to merge her current self with her music, regardless.

Now, the deceptively ambitious songstress has announced the release of a new album next year. Unlike some of her peers, such as the infinitely less charming Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake, something inside Britney motivates her to constantly push out new tunes, but for some reason, I doubt it’s a desperate attempt to remain successful in the music industry. That credit belongs to the likes of Beyoncé and Madonna. No, it’s something else that drives Britney…perhaps an internal emptiness that can only be fulfilled by lip-synching in front of thousands. The vomit-inducing custard curtain from the album cover has been pulled on her recent Circus era, so it seems, but the drama never really ends.

Morrissey/Your Arsenal

Your Arsenal, released in 1992, was the third solo effort by former Smiths vocalist Morrissey. Featuring a new band of ‘hooligans’, namely Alain White and Boz Boorer, they remain with Morrissey until this day. The band takes on a more noted rock-a-billy sound, due to the roots of the musicians Moz chose to hire…it all worked for him masterfully well. The album, although never sporting a true ’single’ , managed to chart three singles in the to ten and garnered a Grammy nomination in the US. Shortly after the release, Mick Ronson dies of liver cancer.

You’re Gonna Need Someone By Your Side—-From the onset, you notice that Moz has crossed over to the ‘dark’ side of ‘Modern Rock’….this is alright, because it plays so well. the backdrop of the song is so huge it seems to give Morrissey the balls he had problems finding. This is a huge barrage of guitar sound and distortion…the band is literally huge….it works fantastically well. a stand out track and always a favorite of mine.

Glamorous Glue—-The musical backdrop is full of sounds from every direction…the sound is loud and abrasive and is the exact thing that Moz needed to satisfy me and attract new fans. He still seems able to deliver a line that is subtle, sardonic and typical despite all of the noise…how is this possible….GENIUS!!!

We’ll Let You Know—-Wow…still surprising after the musical barrage of the past two songs, this is Morrissey at his very best…one of the best post-Smiths songs he ever released, I think this was way over looked and under appreciated. The voice is so clear…the gentle acoustic guitar and the back drop from some obscure recording or another only add to the atmsphere…this is classic and wonderful!!! The lyrics sometimes make you shake your head and wonder what you are supposed to believe in.

The National Front Disco—-Forever on of my favorite Morrissey songs….not because of the lyric, the music or the delivery but all of them combined…this track makes me crazy…makes me want to spin in circles and proclaim my love for a man I have never met. To be so blatant in political statement, while still being in melody and hype is astounding. the energy of the song is devastating and will leave you wiped out afterwards…this is an unappreciated masterpiece!!!!! I love you man!!!!

Certain People I Know—-With a huge Rock-a-billy sentiment, the song is so pleasant you almost resist the message of the song. Morrissey, combined with this band was unstoppable…the American sentiment was inr=tact with subtle nuances of British humor at the same time…..this is fantatic…few songs surpass the track.

We Hate t When Our Friends Become Successful—-Never a favorite track of mine, perhaps I am non-traditionalist…the Americans loved this song and it spurned a huge tour for the Man…to me, there are too many other brilliant moments on this release for this song to mean that much to me…although perhaps his band mates were paying attention and then decided to sue him!!!

You’re The One For Me Fatty—-Another of those little ditty that Moz has a way of penning that are cruel and inane, but stick in your head forever…like Girlfriend In Coma, Moz makes something so cruel seem so pleasant…this man is a GOD!!!

Seasick, Yet Still Docked—-Beginning with typical Morrissey fanfare, you know that this will be one for the books as the first notes begin to take place. Morrissey delivers lines so subtle and sardonic that you ears try ti pick up every little sound that is coming from his vocal box…this is remarkable…the band settles down into a remarkable Smiths dirge that makes you feel warm and fuzzy….this is remarkable now and even more incredible live…just like the older days….wonderful!!!! Morrissey sings…..”My love is as sharp as a needle in your eye….you must be a fool to pass me by…”….WOW!!!!

I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday—-Washing over you like a huge tidal wave, the song builds and builds until you are drowned in the pure emotion of the vice…the release is like a weeks long orgasm with you favorite fuck…..this man is briulliant…..the build up is as good as the release and the release makes you love even more….I love this Man….oh…did I say that already?

Tomorrow—-A wonderfully noisy barrage of the new band Morrissey has accumulated, this song is literally wonderful….including all of the great themes that Moz has covered, it takes on a new energy with the new players. This is literally an excursion into the past glory days of the old band…you ache to hear Marr repeat these chords…Morrissey has never sounded better or more tortured…..this is magnificent.

The UK Singles Chart: Randomness Returns to a Stagnatic Music Industry

It’s really, really hard for me to believe that it’s happening.  But thanks to an online drive to send “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against The Machine (1992) to the top of the UK Singles chart to prevent X-Factor winner Joe McElderry’s cover of “The Climb” from being the Christmas UK #1, the online world has truly spoken to the music industry.  Everyone who read about this with interest, not to mention anyone who bought the Rage Against the Machine song, has got to feel victorious.  Hello, unpredictability and randomness, and welcome back!  I think we’ll see a few of these online campaigns, and they may continue to work.

Music Industry:  Are you listening?  What is your response?  My final question comes courtesy of a Diana Ross song:  Do You Know Where You’re Going To?

Elton John - Don´t let the sun go down on me

Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Bernie Taupin

I can’t light no more of your darkness
All my pictures seem to fade to black and white
I’m growing tired and time stands still before me
Frozen here on the ladder of my life
Too late to save myself from falling
I took a chance and changed your way of life
But you misread my meaning when I met you
Closed the door and left me blinded by the light
Don’t let the sun go down on me
Although I search myself, it’s always someone else I see
I’d just allow a fragment of your life to wander free
But losing everything is like the sun going down on me
I can’t find, oh the right romantic line
But see me once and see the way I feel
Don’t discard me just because you think I mean you harm
But these cuts I have they need love to help them heal

Warning: This Blog May Pose Serious Health Risks For Lab Rats

I pretty much live in a perpetual state of dehydration. This is primarily the result of the fact that; a) I don’t drink nearly enough water and b) I drink far too much other crap with artificial sweeteners such as coffee, tea and of course diet pop.

Now, I am not someone who is particularly worried about the long-term health risks of consuming artificial sweeteners such as aspartame or splenda, partially because I am not a laboratory rat but also because I don’t really care to be concerned.

Thinking about all the different things nowadays that are potentially harmful is depressing, and frankly if someone was to compile a list of everything that studies have shown could cause problems for human beings down the line then we hardly would consume or do anything it seems.

There is a line from a Family Guy episode where Stewie (the baby who is an evil genius hell-bent on killing his mother Lois) and Brian (the well-read analytical talking dog) are standing outside on a perfect night when Brian says to Stewie, “Look at all those stars,” to which Stewie responds, “I’ve read that starlight gives you cancer. But then again, what doesn’t these days?”

While the applicability of Family Guy to our everyday lives is a Blog (or series of Blogs) for another day this particular quote has significance. Stewie is right. Every time you turn on the television and watch the news, read a magazine article or engage in conversation with a friend it seems like information on what is bad for people is being passed along.

The most disturbing part of this trend is that no one really knows how much of this information has been substantiated by research and testing, and how much of it is simply speculation or a passing fad.

Now, I am not trying to tell people water isn’t good for them, or that everyone should consume as much fake sugar as I do because I am not the healthiest person in the world by any means. Although, at various points in my life I have tried to achieve the ultimate nutritional diet I have come to realize, through several unsuccessful attempts, that it is an unattainable vision.

While I still believe that nutrition is important and should be considered on a daily basis it isn’t something that should control your life as it has mine in the past. Regardless of what I am fed by the mainstream media and nutritional experts I refuse to stop eating carbohydrates after 7:00pm, drink 8 glasses of water a day (which is a totally arbitrary amount to drink since how much water a person should consume is based on their size) or stop eating sodium rich frozen foods.

Most of all I will not stop consuming products that contain artificial sweeteners. I am not taking a firm stand on this point because I own stock in Johnson & Johnson (they own McNeil Nutritional the company that produces Splenda), it is simply because I don’t want to live according to guidelines and recommendations imposed by people and groups that are ultimately saying conflicting things.

When it comes down to it I enjoy drinking diet pop, and while I believe that it is exceedingly important to be knowledgeable about what is considered by the nutritional community to be healthy, I refuse to follow all of their suggestions and thereby completely alter my lifestyle.

Therefore, I will continue to ingest products that are considered “bad” for me, but frankly with the number of things that have been branded with negative labels I honestly don’t really know what’s “good” for me anyway, so for all I know next week diet pop will be considered a G-d damn cure-all…

Second Annual Indie Rock Holiday Party

Wow that is some title for a show on December 12th.
It was one of a few shows happening that busy crazy night.
Decided to go for this one because it was a holiday theme show.
Playing were:

  • Paramedics
  • Old Crowns
  • The Love Machine
  • The Reason (was there for abit)
  • Keep Yourself Good Company (Missed out due to relying on the bus)
  • Amos The Transparent (Missed out)

Sorry if its not a great quality video.
As mentioned before I only got to see four of the six acts that played at Babylon.
Due to the bus but I was also tired since I had family Christmas shopping which I was up since 6am.
First band Paramedics played.
The band has shrunk to a foursome in this set.
Kind of surprised with the change of sound.
But very heavy on the guitar and drum sound.
Did a cover of a Amos The Transparent song.
Insane crazy set they put on, but miss their electronica fused rock sound.
Paramedics @ Babylon
Second band Old Crowns played.
Totally rocking it loud this time.
People enjoyed their stuff.
Joel gave me their setlist and here is what they sang (not sure if they were in order):

  • Hems
  • Jesus
  • Falling
  • Calm
  • Wires
  • Shaky
  • Sailor (where people came up on stage)

Old Crowns @ Babylon
Third band The Love Machine who I always love to see live.
Put a great show.
Previewed new songs.
Last song Love Is On Your Side where some people just got on stage and sang the song and have fun.
The Love Machine @ Babylon
Checked out abit of The Reason.
Very surprised with the change of sound they had.
Last time I saw them was in 2008. Where there was alot of loudness and moshing around.
The Reason @ Babylon
That was my night at this show.

Introducing Gabriel Hart (the most run-on sentences ever)

This post revolves around the music of my buddy Gabriel Hart. He’s a singer/lyricist/guitarist/composer living in downtown Los Angeles. Gabe is someone whose music really made me want to start this site. Hopefully, that won’t flatter him a bit. He’s a friend after all, and when this makes him Lionel Richie famous, I won’t be able to look him in the eye anymore. His bands, Starvations, Fortune’s Flesh, and Jail Weddings have been oddly seldom written about considering their fanbase and the years he’s been at it. These fans are mostly born losers/drug abusers/etc. I suppose, and those types usually don’t waste time blogging. Me however, I’m a winner. In typical sportsmanlike fashion, I’ll try my best not to bloat this write-up.

Breakin’ My Black Heart by The Starvations (b-side of first single, ‘Shut Up Sirens‘)
Upon Your Request by The Starvations (off of their second lp, ‘Get Well Soon‘)
Purgatory by The Starvations (off of their third lp, ‘Gravity’s a Bitch‘)
A few years ago, my brother used to play songs over and o’er by this band called The Starvations. I didn’t know that was their name then, I just recognized the songs, and tied them together through the singer’s weird voice (that’s Gabe, today’s subject). Down the line after finding out their name, I asked Kevin (my bro) for the music. During the in-between time I had fallen in love with the Flesh Eaters, Gun Club, These Immortal Souls, Dream Syndicate, Rik L Rik. I think that’s an alright way to describe The Starvations……. if you only use punk references. If it’s details and “insight” you want, well, something that always struck me about them was the influence of country/rockabilly in the drumming (Ian Harrower). Not neo-fagabilly; more along the lines of the old southern stuff Lux Interior used to listen to. But I don’t actually know anything about rockabilly. Not sure if they had more than one guitar in the early days (they formed around ‘96 if I’m correct), but at their best they had two guitarists; Gabe and Ryan Hertz. Working together they got a sharp, yet warm sound going; something like the Pogues, something like Dave Alvin. They also added a girl on keyboard/elec piano and accordion;Vanessa Gonzalez. The keyboard added to the old California punk feeling. No particular bands really come to mind, and that’s a good thing. The accordion bolstered the nice Irish stench of it all. All I can say about Jean-Paul Garnier’s bass is listen to Upon Your Request.

Fortune’s Flesh tread very similar ground to The Starvations (after they broke up in 2005). Gabe and Ian were still present, with a few friends on hand from other bands. This is not to say they felt like nothing new. Nope, not at all. This band never released a single record, though Gabe tells me they recorded an album. So here’s something special. One of the prettiest songs I ever heard a man sing.
Mutual Fools by Fortune’s Flesh (unreleased)

Death Country by Gabriel Hart (the ‘Nightlight‘ Ep)
These Fleeting Moments by Jail Weddings (‘Inconvenient Dreams‘ Ep)

Fortune’s Flesh didn’t last very long though. I don’t know what it was. I’m not going to ask. Since then (2007?) Gabe released an acoustic solo-ep called The Nightlight, and has formed a new band. And mandaddy, is it a band! 10 members strong, and lead singers are always made out to be the stars, but fuck man, far as I’m concerned that number is not in excess. What you get is some very layered records. Great shit, good for many listens in a row. My favorites are the bass and violin. Live, they take forever to set up, but are well worth it, despite the lack of brutal pits at their performances. Ideally, they should play open air. The charge of the rhythm section would be amazing. JW are fucking far from what the Starvations were. A lot more tender songs, just check I Thought You Were Someone I Knew on they myspace. Did I mention the Weddings are replete with dualing female singers?

So that’s my impression of Gabe’s music in a nutshell. The scant, hacknyed reviews of his records might lead you to believe that he’s a creepy lech, jeffrey lee pierce wannabe, star-in-the-making, godhead, or genius. Maybe he is all those things at one time or another, but what they always neglect is that he’s a human. Same as everyone who ever lived. To me personally, he’s been a kind guy who let me get away with being awkward, and in my experience, most people don’t do that.

Rihanna: Rated R - My Album Review

Ok so one of the CD’s I picked up this week was Rihanna’s “Rated R”, no it wasn’t a spur of the moment thing either I’ve been dying to get my hands on the physical copy for ages now, so come the 23rd I flew to the shop and got myself a copy.

What I can’t seem to understand is why everyone keeps putting RiRi down and making negative comments about the CD of which I  think is her best work yet. The LP includes an infectious mix of Rock, Pop and RnB with a Hip Hop twinge.  From first listen’s I instantly garnered favourites such as “Rudeboy”, “MadHouse”,”Te Amo”, “The Last Song”, and “The Wait is Ova” but it was  still a thing whereas I could listen to the whole set with maybe one exception of “Firebomb” without skipping.

It’s funny really because I wanted to do this review on Monday but I felt I should wait to allow any personal hype to die down a bit so I could make a rational decision. Yet only listening to the CD more I’ve gathered even more favourite’s “G4L (Gangsta 4 Life)”, “Rockstar 101″, “Cold Case Love” and ”Hard”. Saying that Ive nearly named 80% of the tracks.

It’s no secret that Riri has gone particularly Bad Ass, Bad Bitch, dont f*ck with me type of attitude on this project which I love and think only adds more to the character and authenticity of the work. None to the fact she is listed as a co-writer on a majority of the songs also. I just really think it’s her best work yet and can’t wait to see what she come’s up with next.

The music video’s have no excuse to be anything other than HAUTE!!

Track Listing

 1. Mad House
2. Wait Your Turn
3. Hard (ft. Young Jeezy)
4. Stupid In Love
5. ROCKSTAR 101 (ft. Slash)
6. Russian Roulette
7. Fire Bomb
8. Rude Boy (Favorite)
9. Photographs (ft. will.i.am)
10. G4L

Take a Listen: Dala

Dala is Sheila Carabine and Amanda Walther

I’m not going to lie. I’m a huge sucker for beautiful harmonies and I have a thing for adult contemporary music – it’s weird. Sometimes it’s nice to listen to music that it simply sugary sweet.

So I give you Dala, who is Sheila Carabine and Amanda Walther. Their moniker comes from the last syllable of their first names. Smart. Their crystal clear voices melt together to create the most beautiful harmonies; it’s breathtaking, really.

Plus, they were the only Canadian act to play at this year’s legendary Newport Folk Festival which has played host to some of the great folk musicians like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell.

They met in high school and have been making beautiful music together since 2002. Dala has been around for a while on the Canadian music scene, but I just happened to stumble upon then recently. Enjoy!

Take a listen!

LIGHTS, camera, action!

Valerie Poxleitner, aka Lights, has recently begun sweeping the nation with her synth new wave pop hits. If you’ve been on Myspace recently you’ve probably seen her face plastered all over the home page. The pop/new wave thing isn’t something I’m usually into, but I really enjoying to listening to this girl’s music.

Her vocals, very airy and light, may not be something everyone loves. But it’s a perfect fit for her songs, which are happy and vibrant — true feel-good music. Something that makes you want to roll all the windows down on a long summer drive and sing along.

There’s something so innocent about all Lights’ music. This is a young, bubbly girl who loves life. And that’s what her music portrays. So if you need something to cheer you up or lighten the mood, check this girl out: http://www.myspace.com/lights

Lady Gaga, Estranha?!

#prontoFalei

Britney Spears "tomo" no olho

Looking back at before, when I had you near me

I never appreciated our love, I wasn’t interested

Until many things happened, and I have to accept the failure

For letting myself go to infatuation, until it made me regret

Even though you tried to prevent it, but I refused to listen and still left

Halloween - Ennuie

On Halloween I decided to go to Umi Cafe and support Ivana Borojevic who is Ennuie.
Sad to hear that Luca Furgiuele left the band to pursue other endeavors.
Hope someone will help fill the gap for Ennuie.
I haven’t seen Ennuie play since May which was at Avant-Garde Bar for their CD Release show.
It was the first time for Ivana to play the piano which was a surprise.
Very fun and entertaining set.
Considering Ivana was dressed up as Beetlejuice and had to be character.
Luca did show up and reenact a scene from “Phantom of The Opera” which ended abruptly.
There was a guy who played the guitar for one song.
It was a fun Halloween show at Umi Cafe.

Wax Tailor - In The Mood For Life (Mole Listening Pearls)

His first album “Tales of the Forgotten Melodies” drew comparisons to the likes of RJD2, Portishead and DJ Shadow, while his second “Hope & Sorrow” (80 000 sold worldwide) landed him a nomination at the prestigious Victoires de la Musiques, as well as the US Indie Awards. Wax Tailor is coming off a year which saw him tour relentlessly (over 200 concerts) and score the title track for the movie “Paris” by Cedric Klapisch as well as a few remixes (Nina Simone, ASA). He is now a well-established and respected producer.

Written in both Paris and New York City, his third album “In the Mood for Life” is an organic landscape with orchestral accents. Taking its cues from Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop or 60’s Pop Music, this is one eagerly awaited 52 minute journey. Who else than this necromancer of forgotten melodies can assemble such a wide array of influences and make them coexist with such ease? On Wax Tailor album melancholic melodies reminiscent of The Cocteau Twins strike a delicate balance with a brand of Hip-Hop seldom seen since the days of Jurassic 5. Wax Tailor also masters the art of reinventing oneself, and although his signature sound is immediately identifiable, this new album establishes a true evolution both in terms of production and song writing. Sting instruments, which were once just extras, now assume a more prominent role (Dry Your Eyes, Go Without Me). Where genres once crossed path from one track to another, they now collide within a track (This Train, Fireflies). The resulting sound is denser, more organic as well (Leave It, I Own You…) and the song writing more finely chiseled.

With the opening notes, the mood sets the stage. Wax Tailor is now a sound stager, the director of an aural movie whose urban roots meet the perfect casting. Throughout this album, he appropriates a multitude of references with a very personal touch. His music is beyond genres and defies categorization, it is a modern brand of Pop music, designed with a rigor and an expertise that betrays the love this artist puts into his craft.

X Factor judge and Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole tops charts

Girls Aloud singer and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole has reached the number one spot in the UK pop charts with her single Fight For This Love.

It has sold over 290,000 copies so far and is the fastest-selling record this year, as well as being Cole’s first solo release.

Cole, who was dubbed the sexiest woman in the world by readers of FHM magazine in April, has toppled Alexandra Burke, who had been the winner of the X Factor in 2008, from the number one slot.

Cole had performed Fight For This Love on the X Factor when 12.7 million viewers were watching the show last week.

Other recent publicity that has helped her rise to the top was being featured on the cover of the British edition of Vogue in February.

The mystery and power of Marilyn Monroe

Ever since  I heard that the grave next to Marilyn Monroe’s was put on sale,  I’ve been wondering what it was about her that people love so much (men and women) so naturally I had to find out.  What was so captivating that today that people are willing to spend millions to spend an eternity next to her be buried next to her?

Time and time again she appears in pop culture representing the epitome of beauty.  Many female stars attempt to capture her look or are strongly inspired by it.  Need I name some?  I’m sure you know.  Madonna, Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox, Anna Nicole Smith, you get the picture.

She’s got at least one good song about her at least  inspired by her.  Know Elton John’s song Candle in the Wind?  It was originally written in 1973 about Marilyn.

And of course Andy Warhol painted his famous images of Marilyn Monroe.

Why?  It wasn’t just because she was beautiful and died tragically (not to mention the conspiracy theories her death spawned) at the age of 36, although that in itself might be enough to develop a cult following.  She didn’t let a hard early life stop her from becoming successful.  And seriously how many successful model, actress, singers are there? And of course she wasn’t just a dumb blonde.

What do you think about Marilyn Monroe and her influence today?

New Akon Tracks!

Akon’s next album will be released in the first quarter of 2010, and is titled After Life. So far, only a few tracks have been confirmed, but of those, two have leaked.

I posted the snippet of one a few days ago, and it’s okay. The other, “No More You”, though, I really like. Has obvious inspiration from the classic “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King, with a modern touch.

Check them out.

Pop Hearts

Here’s a set of Andy Warhol style pop hearts that I made inspired in part by the Pet Shop Boys Pop Art cover.

 The first heart is fierce.

The second heart enjoys the taste of pop.

The third heart’s in pain.  It needs more pop

And the last heart’s got Madonna and Britney Spears in its eyes as it eats Michael Jackson and eyes Angelina Jolie.

Pop music about pop

There are quite a few pop songs out there about pop, but I’m only naming some of the ones that use pop in the title that I like.

Creature Pop Culture

Prince Pop Life  Sorry this is the remix.  Couldn’t find the original. If nothing else listen to the lyrics.

M  Pop Musik  Not the greatest song ever, but gets nicely stuck in the head which is what pop music tends to do.

Then there’s the Pet Shop Boys Pop Art album.  Which is awesome.

Know anymore pop pop music songs?

Kagehime

Exiled

What can I say?  Everyone loves this song!  It’s verging on anthemic and like most good pop songs it walks the line between drunk-uncle-at-a-wedding cheesy and so unashamedly what it is with no pretense at being anything more, that you can’t help embracing it and then some.

Tried and tested; it’s guaranteed to make people dance on furniture and administer an air grab or two.

(for those of you who do not know of the term ‘air grab’, please visit the Urban Dictionary here for clarification)

O segundo single desse disco é a dançante Don’t Upset the Rhytyhm:

Mas o grande destaque da álbum fica fica por conta da ótima Never Forget You, que tem um quê de Amy Winehouse + Etta James:

Vale assistir também o NOISEttes fazendo um cover incrível de When We Were Young, do The Killers e a versão acústica de Never Forget You, ambos tão bons quanto os originais:

A vocalista Shingai Shoniwa merece um destaque por aqui:

Smash Hits 71

Lets face it – they most certainly don’t make sleeves like this anymore … No idea what the concept is? Basically they have badly (as only the MFP label knew how) – recorded some rather decent tracks – taken one scantily-clad babe – lets face it she is naked from the waste up – given some poor baby her bra for clothes – then got her to act pout ever-so-sexy-like, whilst holding onto kid …  and why the hell not hey ??

Must be said though – and bare in mind I am indeed a Bolan freak – the cover of Hot Love is pretty damn convincing ….  so on the whole a nice find this afternoon for a mere 25 new pennies ….     also as can be seen from the back cover near her head – this copy was actually owned by that saddo-singer Seal – even has his autograph – guess must be worth a mint then !!

Totally Michael - Totally Michael

Incredibly fun pop music. Nothing more, nothing less.

I saw Totally Michael open for Team Robespierre/The Death Set/Ninjasonik a few months ago at the Summit in Columbus. Even with an incredibly small amount of people and a sore throat, he managed to put on one of the most fun shows I’ve ever seen. Just a one-man band, he sometimes uses a guitar, but most of the time just plays his iPod as a backing track while he sings and leaps around the crowd. Probably about the same age, if not a bit younger than most people in the crowd, he still held everyone’s attention through the entire set through a combination of between-song banter and just generally being an awesome guy. His simple, poppy beats and playful lyrics ensured that everyone was good ‘n’ sweaty by the time he ended his set. Talking to him while he was at the merch table, I got a sense that he was still kind of befuddled by this fame and was just along for the ride, similar to everyone else there. It’s that kind of sense of wonder that really makes solid pop music, no inhibitions.

PS: Do not listen to the song “Casual Satisfaction” while your parents/grandparents/employer are around. Just trust me on this one. It probably won’t go over well, and you’re better off safe than sorry.

There's Something About Gaga...

I must admit that I am not really apart of the MTV culture. I realize that there is no way that I can say that without sounding like I’m trying to purposely distance myself from those “assholes” who are apart of the MTV culture, and ironically in doing so I end up looking like an asshole myself. But I promise you that that is not my intention. So, I will say that I’m not completely oblivious to MTV, I know about Spencer and Heidi, I know that ‘Lil Wayne is huge, I know that Eminem made a comeback and I saw his music video for which he won a VMA, I’ve seen a couple of episodes of Alexa Chung etc. etc. However, one person I did not fully know about was Lady Gaga. I had heard her name mentioned by a few friends and also heard her mentioned here and there but I wasn’t completely aware of who she was or what she even looked like. This all changed one week ago when I watched a re-run of the VMA’s and was introduced to her.

I can’t say that I am apart of her fandom, but ladies and gentlemen I liked what I saw.

She was a refreshing sight for the eyes that have grown tired of viewing the same old glamour-filled and unoriginal dross that is usually on the VMA’s. So what was it about her that I liked? Three things: 1) her sets of attire 2) her performance 3) her acceptance speech.

Nearly every celebrity that is qualified to be at or presented with a VMA lives a life of glamour. Whether they have chosen this distinction or it has been forcefully cast upon them is irrelevant, the fact remains that they live a life of glamour. What is glamour? Glamour is the act of watching yourself being envied. Glamour is most notably and prominently present on any red carpet. The celebrity walks onto the red carpet, stops, and poses for the countless number of photographers snapping shots. The celebrity is essentially watching him or herself being envied. What is envious about these celebrities? Their looks. Glamour is based completely on the exterior. Therefore the celebrity must be as aesthetically appealing as possible in order to be envied and glamorous. Female celebrities far outnumber male celebrities when it comes to this factor. What is aesthetically appealing about a female celebrity? A “hot” dress, a beautiful face, and lots and lots of skin. This is an example of a female celebrity who is glamorous. She is scantily clad in an outfit that displays her cleavage, her face is unshielded for everyone to clearly see, and she is showing as much skin as possible without turning the VMA’s into the AVN Awards. This is precisely why I like Lady Gaga. In an era and culture dominated by narcissism she dressed in this, and this, and this. None of those dresses are traditionally beautiful, none of them reveal any skin that’s worthy of arousal, and all of them cover her face in some way, the last one covers her face completely. In the facially obsessed medium of television the face is the most sacred part of the body. Everyone has their face clean, clear, and ready to present it to the world. If a gnat flies in the camera shot and blocks out a pixel of the face then it is a tragedy to the nth degree, and yet Lady Gaga made a conscious effort to cover her face. Just notice the contrast in glamour between Lady Gaga and Pink. Even the facial expressions are different. Pink knows she is being watched and that a reproduction of her image is being made and her smile from ear to ear tells us that she loves it because people envy her. But Lady Gaga has a blank stare, a stoic expression that doesn’t really tell us anything.

Performances are just as glamorous as the performer. Especially female performances are usually chalk full of sexuality and while Lady Gaga’s had its share of sexuality it also had a very dark element that is very rare at a VMA show. During her performance she proceeded to cover herself in blood. Many stunts have been tried and pulled during a performance such as: Britney Spears dancing with a snake or Madonna kissing Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera but both of those were for sexual purposes and they both were in tune with glamour. This, however, was so dark and ominous, she got blood all over her dress and her face, then had bloodshot eyes and was raised up above the audience and her dancers. She was performing on American television where literally millions of people are watching and she didn’t care how she looked. All she cared about was the quality and content of her performance. It was very original and completely against the tide.

Lada Gaga closed out her acceptance speech by saying, “This is for God and the gays.” I, like many others, don’t like it when certain uninformed celebrities take up a useless cause and spew volumes of nonsensical rhetoric pertaining to that topic. However, I don’t think this falls under that category. If she had just said, “This is for the gays” it would have been a dumb thing to say. If she had just said, “This is for God” it would have been an even dumber thing to say. However, two forces –God and the gays- that people generally cite as being opposed were being brought together, which made it smart thing to say. A notion exists which dictates that if you’re with God then you’re against gay people, and her comment was meant to put a hold on that and look at it from a different perspective. All she said was, “This is for God and the gays” but saying something and meaning something sometimes don’t exist on the same levels of depth. Her sentence was shallow, but the statement was much deeper. Why must it be that God and gay people are mutually exclusive? Why must it be that God must hate gay people? Why can’t it be that God can accept and love gay people as He does with all of His children? I think all of those questions fit within that one simple sentence. I thought it was a simple sentence but a profound statement.

To conclude, I want to say this, I don’t know if Lady Gaga was aware of what she was really doing when she wore all those outfits, covered herself in blood, and made the statement during her speech, I can only hope that she did. However, I do know that that is how I interpreted it and I really liked it. Do I like her music? No. Am I a fan? No. But I think when someone like this comes along in a long line of carbon copies, we should take notice.

Pearl Jam - Backspacer

I never thought I’d ever describe a Pearl Jam as being fun, as I’ve variously found their albums to be serious, earnest, weighty, political or sometimes downright gloomy, but that’s just what their latest record, Backspacer, a lot of fun. They’re back working with Brendan O’Brien, who produced their now classic debut, Ten, and the result is a straight ahead album rock album with acknowledged pop and New Wave influences. That said, their version of pop influenced rock is as distant from Nickelback or the like as you can imagine. Most of the eleven tracks rock pretty hard, keeping it short and sweet, with most of the songs clocking in around the three minute mark. Notable exceptions to this can be found at the middle and end of the album, “Just Breathe” and “The End,” respectively. “Just Breathe” is a gorgeous track that already ranks among my favorite tracks of the year, and certainly amongst the Pearl Jam songbook, and “The End” is nearly as good, and a perfect closer. Pearl Jam in a good mood, rockin’ it hard? What’s not for a Pearl Jam fan to like? Definitely recommended. Standout cuts: “Gonna See My Friend,”
“The Fixer,” “Just Breathe” and “The End.”

Red Rain – Peter Gabriel

Del primero qué decir que no se sepa ya: yo mismo he escrito ya sobre With or without you, que acompañaba a I still haven’t found o Where the streets…

Dear and the Headlights_2009_09_09 (Scottsdale, AZ - Martini Ranch)

I hadn’t heard a proper set from Dear and the Headlights until this show and I have to admit I was impressed. Why else would I post the recording? It’s definitely not my usual fare, but the Cure-ish vocals and 100% solid song writing make this band something to listen to. This was also the final appearance of Chuckie Duff playing with the band.

My last DATH show…
Current mood:  nostalgic
Hi DATH friends,

It’s kind of hard to express how important all the boys in DATH have been in my life over the last 4 years. So, I am not going to even try. I did, however, want to say thanks to all of you who continue to make DATH possible by listening to the tunes and sharing them with others. It’s bittersweet leaving the band, because I know they are going to continue to kill it without me. I’m excited, along with the rest of you, to pick up the next record and give it a spin, whenever that may be.

It would mean a lot to me to see all you local folks at the show on Wednesday. I promise to stay just sober enough to put on a great show. Oh, and we’re playing with 3 new bands that we’ve never shared a bill with before: Austin Gibbs, The Diadem and Kissing Cousins. All great bands, so even more reasons to make it out.

Much Love!
Chuckie

Yahoo's Redesign Live - WayBackMachine Crashes in Endless Loop

I visited Yahoo today to see what all the excitement was about.

Honestly, I never go to Yahoo. I wouldn’t know the new from the old.

The mind boggles that Yahoo is still listed as one of the most highly hit sites. Of course, I believe that as much as I believe Nielsen ratings.

Nonetheless, it was like my own little time machine. Drifting back to the portal days of the mid-to-late 90s. Made me long for AOL.

Rock on, Yahoo. Never give in.

Yahoo 1997 – Before you had to pay hundreds of dollars to get listed… aka the good ‘ol days.

Yahoo 2005 – When being listed didn’t really mean anything.

Yahoo 2009 – When being on Yahoo’s first page of search results amounts to 1/1000th of the Google traffic for the same phrase*

Kany García releases her new album today, "Boleto de Entrada"!

Today is the day Kany García’s fans have been waiting for! Because today, Kany releases her much-awaited second album, a production of all brand new tracks titled Boleto de Entrada!

The acclaimed Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and musician first burst out onto the music scene in 2007 with the album Cualquier Día. After two years of success, Kany is now ready to move on to a fresh new chapter in her life: the music of Boleto de Entrada.

As with all the other songs in the album, produced by Kany and by Colombian music veteran Andrés Castro (Carlos Vives, Reyli), Kany wrote the first single herself. Feliz is a true celebration of her Latin roots, and highlights sounds that she has never explored before!

Kany returns with 12 songs that clearly show how she has expanded her musical repertoire. She collaborates, for example, with urban music star Tego Calderón in the humorous song El Feo (she also recorded a duet with him for his new and upcoming CD); pays homage to her native island, Puerto Rico, in the hauntingly beautiful Mi Dueña; and rocks the house with the fun and rhythmic Eres Tú.

In all, Boleto de Entrada is full of surprises. It is a ticket to an unexpected musical ride!

For more information on Kany García online, visit www.kanygarcia.com, www.myspace.com/kanygarcia and www.facebook.com/kanygarcia

surprise (goodbye)

the world of pop music today reeled in shock over news that lone remaining founding member keisha buchanan would be departing from the sugababes after 11 years of ushering brilliant pop music into the world at large. sugababes, a trio consisting originally of mutya buena, keisha buchanan, and siobhan donaghy now seems to have abandoned any semblance of credibility and will be the equivalent of the british menudo. lame. here is a taste of the sugababes early in their career with pop classic “overload.” brilliant. actually, click here to watch it as embedding videos is clearly the biggest threat to the music industry ever.

anyway, siobhan left the group before promotion for the first album had fully wrapped up and subsequently former atomic kitten member heidi range was brought in to shore up the ranks. this became sugababes 2.0 and perhaps the most successful and memorable of the line-ups. returning initially with the killer freak like me, and subsequently with hits including hole in the head, in the middle (i always liked this video), and absolute stormer “push the button” which also has an amazing video that i managed to pull off youtube, below.

so, this is now during promotion for their fourth album “taller in more ways” and mid-way through, mutya decides to leave the babes at which time amelle berrabah is drafted into the ranks. this leaves a lot of fans screaming ‘the end is nigh’ but the babes go on to release a successful singles collection and later their fifth studio album “change” is preceded by what can only be described as an instant pop masterpiece, about you now. ok, so then last year the girls put out a bit of a clunker – album, “catfights and spotlights” – but this year they were supposed to be back and better than ever.

quick sidenote here, i don’t think i have properly conveyed up to this point the incredible success the sugababes achieved in the uk music scene during a time when pop music was not particularly cool or popular. during the 2.0 heydays, the sugababes carried an innate credibility and were able to buck the downward trend in pop music becoming the biggest girl band of the early millennium with girls aloud, at the time, a distant second. having jettisoned two members (below) into the flotsam and jetsam of the pop ocean, sugababes 3.0 were, until just the other day, poised for a big comeback.

so all this brings me to the point of this entire post. it was announced today that keisha buchanan has been ousted from the group that she started as a 13-year old girl to make way for some eurovision tart named jade ewen. it’s quite the sordid tale of intrigue and backstabbing with keisha stating as recently as friday that any rumours of disquiet among the band were false, only to have the record company come out today with the replacement news. then later keisha stated that it was not her choice to leave the band. it’s both a salacious and saddening pop tale to be honest and with respect to the new lineup popjustice put it best – as is so often the case – with the following:

Sorry Heidi, sorry Amelle, sorry Jade – you make a brilliant trio but Sugababes as a band is now dead. Pick a new name or spend the rest of your time in this band as a total laughing stock.

also, popjustice had set up a sugababes memory book which now just features a video link and the following, at which i couldn’t stop laughing earlier as it’s a total TRUTH!:

This was a little guestbook for people to share their Sugababes memories and messages but somewhat inevitably the usual bunch of cunts ruined it with a predictable string of spam and libel. Sorry.

the last shred of credibility was today ripped from the formerly quite brilliant sugababes and for that reason it is a sad day in the pop universe.

RIP sugababes.

vamos a vivirla a tope
tengo plata
vamos a gastarla toda

Salir y romper con todo
me gusta, oh Dios mío
salta de ese sofá,
vamos baja a disfrutar.

Sé que habrá baile
si conseguimos bajar,
y saldremos
y nos liberaremos de todo.

Me siento estresado
quiero dejarme llevar,
vamos a salir fuera del espacio
y a perder completamente el control

Llenaré mi copa
de felicidad,
miraré como baila ella
y acabaré por conquistarla.

Pintaremos la ciudad,
la cerraremos,
fundiremos el cielo
y lo haremos una y otra vez

Vamos a hacerlo…

vamos a vivirla a tope
tengo plata
vamos a gastarla toda

Salir y romper con todo
me gusta, oh Dios mío
salta de ese sofá,
vamos baja a disfrutar.

Llenaré mi copa (bebida)
de felicidad (vida)
miraré como baila ella
(muévete, muévete)
y acabaré por conquistarla.

Pintaremos la ciudad,
la cerraremos,
fundiremos el cielo
y lo haremos una y otra vez.

Vamos a hacerlo…
y a vivir al máximo

Aquí venimos,
aquí vamos
tenemos que movernos

Es fácil llegar,
es fácil ir,
ahora estamos en la cima

Siente el disparo,
mueve el cuerpo,
el movimiento no tiene final.

Gira y gira,
arriba y abajo
alrededor del reloj.

Lunes, Martes,
Miércoles y Jueves,
Viernes, Sábado,
Sábado al Domingo

Vente con nosotros,
sabes lo que queremos decir
fiesta diaria
fiesta todos los días.

From now on, it’s enough to meet

I’ll probably look at you and smile

I might say hello

Bon Jovi - It's My Life

Video Solicitado por visitante: Jesseny 17/09/2009

VideoClip: It´s My Life

Tema: It´s My Life

Grupo/Artista: Bon Jovi

Letra de canción It´s My Life de Bon Jovi

This ain’t a song for the broken-hearted

No silent prayer for the faith-departed

I ain’t gonna be just a face in the crowd

You’re gonna hear my voice

When I shout it out loud

Chorus:

It’s my life

It’s now or never

I ain’t gonna live forever

I just want to live while I’m alive

(it’s my life)

My heart is like an open highway

Like frankie said

I did it my way

I just wanna live while I’m alive

It’s my life

This is for the ones who stood their ground

For tommy and gina who never backed down

Tomorrow’s getting harder make no mistake

Luck ain’t even lucky

Got to make your own breaks

Chorus:

It’s my life

And it’s now or never

I ain’t gonna live forever

I just want to live while I’m alive

(it’s my life)

My heart is like an open highway

Like frankie said

I did it my way

I just want to live while I’m alive

’cause it’s my life

Better stand tall when they’re calling you out

Don’t bend, don’t break, baby, don’t back down

Chorus:

It’s my life

And it’s now or never

’cause I ain’t gonna live forever

I just want to live while I’m alive

(it’s my life)

My heart is like an open highway

Like frankie said

I did it my way

I just want to live while I’m alive

Chorus:

It’s my life

And it’s now or never

’cause I ain’t gonna live forever

I just want to live while I’m alive

(it’s my life)

My heart is like an open highway

Like frankie said

I did it my way

I just want to live while I’m alive

’cause it’s my life!
