O segundo single desse disco é a dançante Don’t Upset the Rhytyhm:
Mas o grande destaque da álbum fica fica por conta da ótima Never Forget You, que tem um quê de Amy Winehouse + Etta James:
Vale assistir também o NOISEttes fazendo um cover incrível de When We Were Young, do The Killers e a versão acústica de Never Forget You, ambos tão bons quanto os originais:
A vocalista Shingai Shoniwa merece um destaque por aqui:

Lets face it – they most certainly don’t make sleeves like this anymore … No idea what the concept is? Basically they have badly (as only the MFP label knew how) – recorded some rather decent tracks – taken one scantily-clad babe – lets face it she is naked from the waste up – given some poor baby her bra for clothes – then got her to act pout ever-so-sexy-like, whilst holding onto kid … and why the hell not hey ??
Must be said though – and bare in mind I am indeed a Bolan freak – the cover of Hot Love is pretty damn convincing …. so on the whole a nice find this afternoon for a mere 25 new pennies …. also as can be seen from the back cover near her head – this copy was actually owned by that saddo-singer Seal – even has his autograph – guess must be worth a mint then !!
Incredibly fun pop music. Nothing more, nothing less.
I saw Totally Michael open for Team Robespierre/The Death Set/Ninjasonik a few months ago at the Summit in Columbus. Even with an incredibly small amount of people and a sore throat, he managed to put on one of the most fun shows I’ve ever seen. Just a one-man band, he sometimes uses a guitar, but most of the time just plays his iPod as a backing track while he sings and leaps around the crowd. Probably about the same age, if not a bit younger than most people in the crowd, he still held everyone’s attention through the entire set through a combination of between-song banter and just generally being an awesome guy. His simple, poppy beats and playful lyrics ensured that everyone was good ‘n’ sweaty by the time he ended his set. Talking to him while he was at the merch table, I got a sense that he was still kind of befuddled by this fame and was just along for the ride, similar to everyone else there. It’s that kind of sense of wonder that really makes solid pop music, no inhibitions.

PS: Do not listen to the song “Casual Satisfaction” while your parents/grandparents/employer are around. Just trust me on this one. It probably won’t go over well, and you’re better off safe than sorry.
I must admit that I am not really apart of the MTV culture. I realize that there is no way that I can say that without sounding like I’m trying to purposely distance myself from those “assholes” who are apart of the MTV culture, and ironically in doing so I end up looking like an asshole myself. But I promise you that that is not my intention. So, I will say that I’m not completely oblivious to MTV, I know about Spencer and Heidi, I know that ‘Lil Wayne is huge, I know that Eminem made a comeback and I saw his music video for which he won a VMA, I’ve seen a couple of episodes of Alexa Chung etc. etc. However, one person I did not fully know about was Lady Gaga. I had heard her name mentioned by a few friends and also heard her mentioned here and there but I wasn’t completely aware of who she was or what she even looked like. This all changed one week ago when I watched a re-run of the VMA’s and was introduced to her.
I can’t say that I am apart of her fandom, but ladies and gentlemen I liked what I saw.
She was a refreshing sight for the eyes that have grown tired of viewing the same old glamour-filled and unoriginal dross that is usually on the VMA’s. So what was it about her that I liked? Three things: 1) her sets of attire 2) her performance 3) her acceptance speech.
Nearly every celebrity that is qualified to be at or presented with a VMA lives a life of glamour. Whether they have chosen this distinction or it has been forcefully cast upon them is irrelevant, the fact remains that they live a life of glamour. What is glamour? Glamour is the act of watching yourself being envied. Glamour is most notably and prominently present on any red carpet. The celebrity walks onto the red carpet, stops, and poses for the countless number of photographers snapping shots. The celebrity is essentially watching him or herself being envied. What is envious about these celebrities? Their looks. Glamour is based completely on the exterior. Therefore the celebrity must be as aesthetically appealing as possible in order to be envied and glamorous. Female celebrities far outnumber male celebrities when it comes to this factor. What is aesthetically appealing about a female celebrity? A “hot” dress, a beautiful face, and lots and lots of skin. This is an example of a female celebrity who is glamorous. She is scantily clad in an outfit that displays her cleavage, her face is unshielded for everyone to clearly see, and she is showing as much skin as possible without turning the VMA’s into the AVN Awards. This is precisely why I like Lady Gaga. In an era and culture dominated by narcissism she dressed in this, and this, and this. None of those dresses are traditionally beautiful, none of them reveal any skin that’s worthy of arousal, and all of them cover her face in some way, the last one covers her face completely. In the facially obsessed medium of television the face is the most sacred part of the body. Everyone has their face clean, clear, and ready to present it to the world. If a gnat flies in the camera shot and blocks out a pixel of the face then it is a tragedy to the nth degree, and yet Lady Gaga made a conscious effort to cover her face. Just notice the contrast in glamour between Lady Gaga and Pink. Even the facial expressions are different. Pink knows she is being watched and that a reproduction of her image is being made and her smile from ear to ear tells us that she loves it because people envy her. But Lady Gaga has a blank stare, a stoic expression that doesn’t really tell us anything.
Performances are just as glamorous as the performer. Especially female performances are usually chalk full of sexuality and while Lady Gaga’s had its share of sexuality it also had a very dark element that is very rare at a VMA show. During her performance she proceeded to cover herself in blood. Many stunts have been tried and pulled during a performance such as: Britney Spears dancing with a snake or Madonna kissing Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera but both of those were for sexual purposes and they both were in tune with glamour. This, however, was so dark and ominous, she got blood all over her dress and her face, then had bloodshot eyes and was raised up above the audience and her dancers. She was performing on American television where literally millions of people are watching and she didn’t care how she looked. All she cared about was the quality and content of her performance. It was very original and completely against the tide.
Lada Gaga closed out her acceptance speech by saying, “This is for God and the gays.” I, like many others, don’t like it when certain uninformed celebrities take up a useless cause and spew volumes of nonsensical rhetoric pertaining to that topic. However, I don’t think this falls under that category. If she had just said, “This is for the gays” it would have been a dumb thing to say. If she had just said, “This is for God” it would have been an even dumber thing to say. However, two forces –God and the gays- that people generally cite as being opposed were being brought together, which made it smart thing to say. A notion exists which dictates that if you’re with God then you’re against gay people, and her comment was meant to put a hold on that and look at it from a different perspective. All she said was, “This is for God and the gays” but saying something and meaning something sometimes don’t exist on the same levels of depth. Her sentence was shallow, but the statement was much deeper. Why must it be that God and gay people are mutually exclusive? Why must it be that God must hate gay people? Why can’t it be that God can accept and love gay people as He does with all of His children? I think all of those questions fit within that one simple sentence. I thought it was a simple sentence but a profound statement.
To conclude, I want to say this, I don’t know if Lady Gaga was aware of what she was really doing when she wore all those outfits, covered herself in blood, and made the statement during her speech, I can only hope that she did. However, I do know that that is how I interpreted it and I really liked it. Do I like her music? No. Am I a fan? No. But I think when someone like this comes along in a long line of carbon copies, we should take notice.
I never thought I’d ever describe a Pearl Jam as being fun, as I’ve variously found their albums to be serious, earnest, weighty, political or sometimes downright gloomy, but that’s just what their latest record, Backspacer, a lot of fun. They’re back working with Brendan O’Brien, who produced their now classic debut, Ten, and the result is a straight ahead album rock album with acknowledged pop and New Wave influences. That said, their version of pop influenced rock is as distant from Nickelback or the like as you can imagine. Most of the eleven tracks rock pretty hard, keeping it short and sweet, with most of the songs clocking in around the three minute mark. Notable exceptions to this can be found at the middle and end of the album, “Just Breathe” and “The End,” respectively. “Just Breathe” is a gorgeous track that already ranks among my favorite tracks of the year, and certainly amongst the Pearl Jam songbook, and “The End” is nearly as good, and a perfect closer. Pearl Jam in a good mood, rockin’ it hard? What’s not for a Pearl Jam fan to like? Definitely recommended. Standout cuts: “Gonna See My Friend,”
“The Fixer,” “Just Breathe” and “The End.”

Del primero qué decir que no se sepa ya: yo mismo he escrito ya sobre With or without you, que acompañaba a I still haven’t found o Where the streets…
I hadn’t heard a proper set from Dear and the Headlights until this show and I have to admit I was impressed. Why else would I post the recording? It’s definitely not my usual fare, but the Cure-ish vocals and 100% solid song writing make this band something to listen to. This was also the final appearance of Chuckie Duff playing with the band.

My last DATH show…
Current mood: nostalgic
Hi DATH friends,
It’s kind of hard to express how important all the boys in DATH have been in my life over the last 4 years. So, I am not going to even try. I did, however, want to say thanks to all of you who continue to make DATH possible by listening to the tunes and sharing them with others. It’s bittersweet leaving the band, because I know they are going to continue to kill it without me. I’m excited, along with the rest of you, to pick up the next record and give it a spin, whenever that may be.
It would mean a lot to me to see all you local folks at the show on Wednesday. I promise to stay just sober enough to put on a great show. Oh, and we’re playing with 3 new bands that we’ve never shared a bill with before: Austin Gibbs, The Diadem and Kissing Cousins. All great bands, so even more reasons to make it out.
Much Love!
Chuckie

I visited Yahoo today to see what all the excitement was about.
Honestly, I never go to Yahoo. I wouldn’t know the new from the old.
The mind boggles that Yahoo is still listed as one of the most highly hit sites. Of course, I believe that as much as I believe Nielsen ratings.
Nonetheless, it was like my own little time machine. Drifting back to the portal days of the mid-to-late 90s. Made me long for AOL.
Rock on, Yahoo. Never give in.
Yahoo 1997 – Before you had to pay hundreds of dollars to get listed… aka the good ‘ol days.
Yahoo 2005 – When being listed didn’t really mean anything.
Yahoo 2009 – When being on Yahoo’s first page of search results amounts to 1/1000th of the Google traffic for the same phrase*

Today is the day Kany García’s fans have been waiting for! Because today, Kany releases her much-awaited second album, a production of all brand new tracks titled Boleto de Entrada!
The acclaimed Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and musician first burst out onto the music scene in 2007 with the album Cualquier Día. After two years of success, Kany is now ready to move on to a fresh new chapter in her life: the music of Boleto de Entrada.
As with all the other songs in the album, produced by Kany and by Colombian music veteran Andrés Castro (Carlos Vives, Reyli), Kany wrote the first single herself. Feliz is a true celebration of her Latin roots, and highlights sounds that she has never explored before!
Kany returns with 12 songs that clearly show how she has expanded her musical repertoire. She collaborates, for example, with urban music star Tego Calderón in the humorous song El Feo (she also recorded a duet with him for his new and upcoming CD); pays homage to her native island, Puerto Rico, in the hauntingly beautiful Mi Dueña; and rocks the house with the fun and rhythmic Eres Tú.
In all, Boleto de Entrada is full of surprises. It is a ticket to an unexpected musical ride!

the world of pop music today reeled in shock over news that lone remaining founding member keisha buchanan would be departing from the sugababes after 11 years of ushering brilliant pop music into the world at large. sugababes, a trio consisting originally of mutya buena, keisha buchanan, and siobhan donaghy now seems to have abandoned any semblance of credibility and will be the equivalent of the british menudo. lame. here is a taste of the sugababes early in their career with pop classic “overload.” brilliant. actually, click here to watch it as embedding videos is clearly the biggest threat to the music industry ever.
anyway, siobhan left the group before promotion for the first album had fully wrapped up and subsequently former atomic kitten member heidi range was brought in to shore up the ranks. this became sugababes 2.0 and perhaps the most successful and memorable of the line-ups. returning initially with the killer freak like me, and subsequently with hits including hole in the head, in the middle (i always liked this video), and absolute stormer “push the button” which also has an amazing video that i managed to pull off youtube, below.
so, this is now during promotion for their fourth album “taller in more ways” and mid-way through, mutya decides to leave the babes at which time amelle berrabah is drafted into the ranks. this leaves a lot of fans screaming ‘the end is nigh’ but the babes go on to release a successful singles collection and later their fifth studio album “change” is preceded by what can only be described as an instant pop masterpiece, about you now. ok, so then last year the girls put out a bit of a clunker – album, “catfights and spotlights” – but this year they were supposed to be back and better than ever.
quick sidenote here, i don’t think i have properly conveyed up to this point the incredible success the sugababes achieved in the uk music scene during a time when pop music was not particularly cool or popular. during the 2.0 heydays, the sugababes carried an innate credibility and were able to buck the downward trend in pop music becoming the biggest girl band of the early millennium with girls aloud, at the time, a distant second. having jettisoned two members (below) into the flotsam and jetsam of the pop ocean, sugababes 3.0 were, until just the other day, poised for a big comeback.
so all this brings me to the point of this entire post. it was announced today that keisha buchanan has been ousted from the group that she started as a 13-year old girl to make way for some eurovision tart named jade ewen. it’s quite the sordid tale of intrigue and backstabbing with keisha stating as recently as friday that any rumours of disquiet among the band were false, only to have the record company come out today with the replacement news. then later keisha stated that it was not her choice to leave the band. it’s both a salacious and saddening pop tale to be honest and with respect to the new lineup popjustice put it best – as is so often the case – with the following:
Sorry Heidi, sorry Amelle, sorry Jade – you make a brilliant trio but Sugababes as a band is now dead. Pick a new name or spend the rest of your time in this band as a total laughing stock.
also, popjustice had set up a sugababes memory book which now just features a video link and the following, at which i couldn’t stop laughing earlier as it’s a total TRUTH!:
This was a little guestbook for people to share their Sugababes memories and messages but somewhat inevitably the usual bunch of cunts ruined it with a predictable string of spam and libel. Sorry.
the last shred of credibility was today ripped from the formerly quite brilliant sugababes and for that reason it is a sad day in the pop universe.

vamos a vivirla a tope
tengo plata
vamos a gastarla toda
Salir y romper con todo
me gusta, oh Dios mío
salta de ese sofá,
vamos baja a disfrutar.
Sé que habrá baile
si conseguimos bajar,
y saldremos
y nos liberaremos de todo.
Me siento estresado
quiero dejarme llevar,
vamos a salir fuera del espacio
y a perder completamente el control
Llenaré mi copa
de felicidad,
miraré como baila ella
y acabaré por conquistarla.
Pintaremos la ciudad,
la cerraremos,
fundiremos el cielo
y lo haremos una y otra vez
Vamos a hacerlo…
y a vivir al máximo.
Tengo la sensación

Aquí venimos,
aquí vamos
tenemos que movernos
Es fácil llegar,
es fácil ir,
ahora estamos en la cima
Siente el disparo,
mueve el cuerpo,
el movimiento no tiene final.
Gira y gira,
arriba y abajo
alrededor del reloj.

My online friend Marius Mink sent me this amazing collection of links to Asian pop slash, and it was too delicious not to share this post, with her permission, with the world of fan girls and boys.
A quick introduction to this extraordinary guest post. Slash is typically gay male pairings from pop culture created by small groups of female fans. A version of Boys Love based on famous characters from manga, movies or even real life (think Kirk and Spock, for example).
What is most amazing about the Youtube clicks below is that Asian pop has taken this culture one step further. The boy bands themselves are now featuring male smooching as a “fanservice” to their boys-love-loving female fans in concert and on television. While the US has women kissing women in order to turn on men, this latest Asian phenomenon has boys kissing boys in order to get their female fans into a super-frenzy. OMG!
Please enjoy!

Marius Mink’s special guest post:
In an earnest attempt to find my hanchul collection, I went through my favorites and found SO many delicious treats for you. I hope you enjoy the vids. Most of them have nothing to do with Hanchul but I know you will like them. Also, unfortunately most of my good Hanchul stuff got deleted from youtube, but some pretty important stuff is still on.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9wt73LF8xI&feature=channel_page Heechul and Sungmin kissed. Starting on Jan 2nd, 2009 (I believe), Heechul performed a song called “Crazy” several times. ^^ He kissed four boys in four diff performances. This, of course, made ALL the kpop news blogs. This is my second favorite but, unfortunately, as much as I love Sungmin, he’s an effing homophobe. For MONTHS after this kiss, he complained about it and said things like “I can’t be around Heechul the same anymore.” In an earlier incident, Sungmin had to touch lips with Hangeng and he made a big deal about that too. -_-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZx4MRBe2yw&feature=related Heechul and Jungmo—bad quality but worth it. This was the first kiss. The first time I was floored b/c Korean pop culture is way more conservative than Japanese, so this was groundbreaking. By the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time, I was absolutely in shock. Heechul’s gotta be the most daring man in Kpop. Jungmo is part of a krock band called TRAX (they’re not well known but they’re awesome). In my opinion, Jay Kim (the singer of TRAX) and Heechul kind of have a history together. There is some convincing canon slash on them out there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBkpXcwiDdI&feature=related Heechul and Siwon–the uber Christian (but I think homo) member of Super Junior.
http://gengchul.com/ If you can read Chinese…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aHAbaR1kkk&feature=channel_page Kindan no Koi- I have yet to watch this film. It’s probably one of the only BL films in Japan that I haven’t seen. I can’t even find it raw. It looks bad, but that’s never stopped me from watching/reading yaoi before. It’s from the ppl who made Boys Love—best movie ever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETZ-q26UKgE&feature=channel_page This is a vid of the now broken up band of Korean transexuals called Lady. My sis and I love them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AwB2TDLlo8&feature=related You’re effing welcome. It’s a shame that youtube removed the first vid I ever saw of him. This man, Jung Hyung Min, got a little stint of fame from this event. He was on Starking, one of the most famous tv shows on Korean tv.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-rd4ntV_z4&feature=related Jung hyung min again. I LOVE this guy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5013ob6KZ4&feature=channel_page This is the opening song of a crazy ass Japanese gay camp film I stumbled upon at a previously homophobic friend’s PPV. The two lovers, Yaji and Kita, are in search of magical mushrooms b/c the blonde one is addicted to drugs. The blonde guy is super famous. He played the emperor in Tom Cruise’s Last Samurai. I find that hilarious. The brunette is super hot in real life. They make out a couple of times in the film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNKa56ooOQo&translated=1 This is a recent gay Korean film based on the uber famous Japanese manga Antique Bakery (Bangin-sensei cosplayed as the glasses guy). This film is fabulous and the gay action between the French boy and the pretty Korean guy is gorgeous. Watch it. You’ll love it.
Now we begin the Hanchul part:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkINzfl-AEw&feature=PlayList&p=09609FD031338ECF During their Don’t Don stage, Hangeng boasted some fierce blonde hair. This is his now famous hip thrust in the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cp2pLLGoRQ&feature=PlayList&p=D7A497AF7B35247B This is a really cute vid of Hanchul holding hands and being all coupley on Chinese television. I’m not gonna lie… this video inspires me almost more than anything else to learn Chinese. I SO want to be able to understand Hangeng and the Chin prog he’s on.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfvoz4y4odc I love this SOOO much. It’s adorable. Hanchul at its best.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD3Vj6j_VLo This is THE most famous Hanchul clip. It occurred on the Korean variety show YSMM (which I’m addicted to). I highly recommend watching the whole ep b/c it’s hilarious and thoroughly entertaining. Plus, I’m in love with the singer Sung Si Kyung and he’s on there. Also, the woman with short orangy hair is a great singer too.
No matter what you think of the inappropriate or rude nature of the disruption last night, it is clear that Kanye was right and the MTV awards are a sham. How can Beyonce’s video get best video, but fail to get best female video? If it is the best video overall then clearly it is the best female video as well. This would be like an animated movie winning the best picture Oscar but failing to get the award for best animated film-it just doesn’t make sense. MTV’s choice to give best overall video to Beyonce at the end of the show vindicated Kanye’s rant.
I recently caught up for a chat with Al McKay and Al Montfort from Melbourne’s Dick Diver about what’s up with their name, plans for their upcoming EP and why they are making such an impact in Melbourne’s music scene lately.
Al McKay (guitar and vocals)
Al Montfort (bass)
So what’s up with the name Dick Diver?
It’s a character from an F. Scott Fitzgerald book… is it?
Nah we just like the alliteration, all the Melbourne bands start with D. The Drones, the Devastations, Dan Kelly…
Fucking love all the D bands. There’s already a few good ones, Darling Downs, double D as well.
We just like the letter. We watched Sesame Street one morning and it was presented by the letter D. Nah yeah but it’s a character in a book.
What book?
Ah I’ve never read it…
Tender is the Night.
How do you describe your sound?
I usually say like we are like a wimpy band or something, we’re like Australian pop. 80s Australian pop.
Maybe a bit like The Velvet Underground but a bit more rock n’ roll.
It’s like the Velvet Underground crossed with fucking Eddie Cochran, crossed with Jerry Lee Lewis.
Any other Melbourne bands that you get compared too?
At the moment I really like The Twerps, we always get compared to them by friends.
I guess we don’t really compare ourselves to other bands that much but yeah The Twerps come up a lot.
So you pretty much just do your own thing? Al (bass) since you play in a couple other bands is there any preference when it comes to song writing?
Well I don’t write any songs for Dick Diver, I just write the songs for the other bands so I don’t really have to worry about it I can just kind of go along and do whatever.
So Al (guitar) you write the songs mostly?
Yeah I write all of the songs.
Ruben writes none! Hahaha!
Nah, Ruben and I write the songs. He sings the ones he’s written and I do mine. Sometimes we share a bit, but usually yeah.
Any lyrical themes you kind of stick too?
Not really, I dunno. We just kind of write songs about what we see. Try and get a few gags in there.
Yeah you gotta have gags. Like how did the Michael Jackson song come about because that had different lyrics first didn’t it?
Yeah it did, that one came about from this poem that I ripped off from this guy called Frank O’Hara and I was just thinking about all the media frenzy of Michael Jackson and how ridiculous it was with people feeling really close to him when they never knew him, so dumb. It’s a new song called “Michael Jackson” or “The Day Michael Jackson Died”.
You’ve got some recordings up on Myspace but do you have anything coming out for release?
We’ve got an EP that’s been recorded and mastered and mixed, it’s all in the pipeline to come out in about November. That was done with Mikey from Eddy Current Suppression Ring, he’s recorded pretty much everyone in Melbourne by now. It’s kind of ridiculous.
Yeah and he’s gotten so much better, so good.
Yeah it’s amazing, he’s done The UV Race, Al’s other band.
He did Straight Jacket, my other band, years ago which was really good.
Our Myspace has some of it but is mostly stuff we’ve done ourselves and a couple Mikey’s done.
How did recording with Mikey come about?
My old band, well we still play, Straightjacket Nation used to play a lot with Eddy Current Suppression Ring and go on tour and he recorded us about four years ago so I’ve known him through that and he recorded UV Race last year and I was stoked on it. So we asked him and also Max Kohane from Agents of Abhorrence who helped record the Dick Diver stuff as well.
So that’s coming out on Chapter Music? How did that happen?
We played a show with Guy Blackman [Chapter Music founder] at The Birmingham Hotel earlier in the year and he liked our stuff so we kind of became friends with him and now they are putting out our EP for us.
I really like a lot of the other stuff on Chapter too.
Yeah you guys are playing Chapterfest too yeah?
Yeah it should be really good and they’re just awesome dudes as well.
How have you guys used the internet to promote yourselves? You’ve got your own blog too right?
Yeah, haha, it’s not very active. I think it’s got like four posts on it. It started one night when Rub got really drunk and got home and started writing some shit up there for fun and then it I dunno, I think we were trying to copy The UV Race because they’ve got a really funny blog. It’s more just like for our friends and stuff.
Yeah we need to put up more photos and stuff though. Myspace stuff is just to let people know about gigs and so they can hear us.
Yeah that’s really good for getting shows and keeping in contact with people and stuff.
So have you had much contact via your myspace/blog?
Yeah locally I think that’s how the bands around Melbourne get shows together. Someone will be putting on a night and they can just email around looking for bands or asking their friends. Email places looking where they can play together, it kinda all works out which is pretty cool.
Have you been written about much in press yet?
I always look at the reviews in street press, I’m a bit vain or something like that. I always wanna know but I always like it when there is a bad review because you always remember it cause they always try and put themselves out there. Yeah I always like the bad reviews but yeah we get reviewed or whatever, have we done any other interviews?
We did a bit of a thing on Mess and Noise and a thing for a blog called The White Heart Lane. But that wasn’t much of an interview. That was more of a photo thing.
Yeah that’s a real cool thing.
Haley from Super Wild Horses and a friend of hers, it’s a cool blog.
What she did was she gave us a disposable camera and when we went on tour to Sydney we took all these photos and then we had to write captions for them and do a little interview. It was a cool idea and we got some good photos.
And some not so good photos.
One good one, yeah I was trying to get a photo of a cat smoking a cigarette but the flash wasn’t working so there’s about ten blank photos. There’s some good ones, there’s one where Al looks like a male model at Bondi.
I can’t wait to see that photo, I think I’m gonna mount that on my wall.
You’ve got a lot of shows coming up do you think that’s because of the internet or because of personal connections?
Because we’re fucking good. Hahaha, nah I reckon it’s both. There’s a lot of personal connections and also because we’ve been playing so much that people have seen us and at first most of the shows were like with people that we knew like people that Steph (drummer) knew because she was in another band called Love of Science Fiction and just people I knew from UV Race and Straight Jacket and now we just play heaps.
So you’ve both played in and play in some other bands too?
I play in another band with some friends called Mit Walt which is more like a country kind of Bob Dylan-y sort of thing.
They’re fucking sick.
Ken Dalton or something… With a friend of mine, we’re trying to get her off her arse to do her own thing for ages because she’s got like a really really great voice but that’s just kind of like a fun thing. Rub and I played in a couple of shit bands before Dick Diver which will remain nameless.
Gun Alley, hahaha.
We only did a few shows and stuff, kind of cut our teeth on something.
Do you guys have a problem with people getting your music for free?
The way I see it is people that are into music are, if they like something, are gonna go out and buy it anyway but it’s a good way to get people into it. Otherwise the more people listen to it the more people that people are gonna go and buy it. The old chicken and egg thing.
I’ve got no problem with people posting shit up. I just want to be like the Arctic Monkeys and play at Madison Square Garden.
When I download an mp3 or something of a band I really like or a bootleg or something it just makes me want to buy it more when the actual release comes out.
Do you reckon it’s pretty good will with people around?
People just want to have that material thing in their hands.
Yeah the artwork and the whole record thing. According to Chapter, record sales went up double last year over CDs. I think there’s a lot of people liking that the romance of something to hold in your hands rather than just something you have gotten from the internet.
So your EP is coming out on vinyl then?
Yeah it will come with a 7 inch which has 3 songs on it and then there will be a CD that will have 6 songs on it as well. So there’s 6 songs all together, the three that will be on the vinyl will be on the CD as well.
I see that you are playing with Stephen Malkmus… how did that happen?
Well a guy Woody who does this radio program Wig Wam Bam I think he was doing the tour and he was looking for some supports and I think he handed over the CD to Malkmus to see if we’d be a good support…
And he said he loved it. I heard.
Yeah he said it is the fucking best band ever. Me and Steph at separate times both bugged Woody like “if there’s not a Melbourne support then can we get on it?” And by that stage he had already sent on the CD. So yeah it was just really cool. I know Al and Rub are huge fans.
Especially Rub, I hope he can speak when turns up. Yeah big fan.
Any plans for a proper national tour or anything?
Maybe, we haven’t really discussed it. Maybe when the EP comes out, November/December or something.
We thought about doing a few shows around rural Victoria and then yeah we’ll see what happens from there. Al’s going away over Summer though, to Indonesia to do some work over there.
And to drink Coconuts.
Yeah we’d all love to and maybe even go to the states at some stage, I know that UV Race are playing over there so it kind of makes sense to tie it in. A lot of pipe dreams. A lot of pipe dreams.
‘They will probably just wear some sort of tie or jeans and a nice shirt,’ she says of ‘Twilight’ co-stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.
Ashley Greene has definitely made a splash on the slew of red carpets she’s walked, thanks to her girly, funky sense of fashion. But at this year’s Video Music Awards, she won’t just be heating up the carpet as one of the night’s big attendees, she’ll also be working the red carpet as MTV News’ very own preshow fashion correspondent.
Greene follows in the footsteps of VMA-nominated Taylor Swift, who had the task last year. But she isn’t sure she wants to get Swift on the phone anytime soon for advice. “I kind of want to do my own thing and I don’t want to have anything to go off of,” she told MTV News. “It’s cool we get to put our spin on it. I feel like [getting advice] would mess me up.”
And although Greene may not want to speak to her beforehand, she is excited at the chance to get to meet Swift when the show goes live from New York on Sunday. “I know Taylor Swift went last year, and I’m actually really excited to meet her,” she said about her predecessor. “I think that’s going to be very cool.”
She’s also eager to see what the other fashionistas of the night are going to be wearing for the show. Her predictions for best dressed include a Gossip Girl and two A-list nominees who happen to be battling it out for Moonmen. “I think Leighton Meester has really great style. I think Beyoncé always has really cool things,” she said. “[Lady Gaga] always has the craziest fashion ever, and I’m really excited to see if she’ll come over and chat with me about her inspiration, what she does. I feel like she makes her own world and her own fashion world.”
Greene has been too busy filming “Eclipse” to worry much about what she’ll be wearing at Sunday’s show. “I have absolutely no idea at this point. I think we’re going to squeeze in [a fitting] Saturday. I’m sure it’s going to be something along the lines of some sort of mini and possible silver or gold. I feel like that’s very VMA-ish,” she explained. “As far as boundaries and stuff, push them a bit, and I am the fashion correspondent, so I think I can be a little crazy.”
Greene has even less of an idea of what her fellow “Twilight” stars Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson are going to don for the carpet. “Gosh, I have no idea. I feel like the guys have it a little bit easier. They will probably just wear some sort of tie or jeans and a nice shirt.
“We just did Teen Choice, and Kristen had this crazy dress with bullets all over it, which I kind of feel might have been appropriate for the VMAs. So I’m sure she’ll do something like that again, but I haven’t talked to her about what she wants to wear.”
The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards air live this Sunday, September 13, at 9 p.m. ET.

VIENA, Austria, sep.
This month mark’s the first ever Australian tour of Metric … and I just want to say …. “bam chika bam chika boom boom boom shalac shalac boom shalac shalac boom!”
I was really surprised and ecstatic at the announcement of Canadian indie band Metric on this year’s Parklife line-up – which has taken a notably indie turn this year. But that’s damn fine by me because it brings Metric out here for the very first time, on the back of this year’s (did someone say “breakthrough”) album Fantasies.
Fantasies is a masterful piece of pop and I can’t wait to hear it live. No doubt you will have heard the singles Help I’m Alive and Gimme Sympathy bouncing around your radio of late, and the rest of the album is filled with similar shimmering pop gems.
For me the beauty of Metric lies largely in the appeal of frontwoman Emily Haines. She can make me dance, she can make me cry….all in one breath. Emily is one-tenth or twelfth (who can keep up!) of the Broken Social Scene alumni (although these days she just makes the odd live appearance when the Canadian supergroup gets together on home turf) and has been known to do the solo thing too – see 2006’s achingly beautiful Knives Don’t Have Your Back.
I have been hoping for this tour ever since I started dancing around my room to Monster Hospital back in 2006….this month can’t go fast enough xx

There are many reasons why Jenny Owen Youngs is worth your attention. She writes fantastically joyous but honest folk pop songs. She not only covered Hot In Here by Nelly but also made a video for the song featuring a lot of people dressed up in fuzzy costumes. She also sells t-shirts with such fantastic slogans like ‘I Got Knocked Up By Jenny Owen Youngs’ emblazoned all over them. If that makes you think she’s one in a million, you’d be right.
Hailing from Mont Clair, New Jersey, Jenny came to most people’s attention thanks to her first single, F**k Was I, being picked up my US television shows in 2006 for their soundtracks, but she’d steadily built a strong reputation prior to that thanks to diligently building her music profile on Myspace. This helped her self release her debut album, Batten The Hatches back in 2005; a jaunty, heartfelt, sometimes scathing and always enjoyable collection of acoustic pop songs. You’ll find upbeat and energetic tracks sitting alongside quiet reflective numbers, all laced together with Jenny’s impressive ear for a melodic hook. In Drinking Song, she takes unrequited love and finding solace in drinking and wraps them up in a song so fantastically catchy, upbeat and joyful that it should probably be illegal. It helps that Jenny’s a great guitarist, and the evidence is all over Batten The Hatches from the quiet, restrained plucking on Voice On Tape to the raucous positivity on From Here.
Her second album took some time to see the light of day, and arrived in May of this year, almost four years after its predecessor. Transmitter Failure is a fairly major development and sees her opting for bigger songs with more band instrumentation as opposed to sitting down with her acoustic. It’s nothing to be put off by, as she still delivers plenty of hooks and catchy choruses to outstrip any hack with a guitar and a broken heart. The streamlined folk pop of Led To The Sea is as good a tune as she’s ever written, and the jauntiness of Secrets, where she asks her lover not to question her on her night time antics over a brilliantly uplifting chorus is just as impressive. There’s certainly less of the quiet material that made up a substantial part of Batten The Hatches, which is a small shame, but there’s plenty here to enjoy. Jenny developed a pretty unique sound on Transmitter Failure, and by maintaining those introspective, inquisitive, scathing and playful aspects to her lyrics, she’s kept a large part of her identity as a songwriter whilst becoming somewhat more accessible.
Jenny feels like that smart, sassy, pretty girl next door, or that older sister you liked that let you raid her CD/vinyl collection. She naturally exudes the kind of cool and honesty that no amount of album sales can bring, so if you fancy a songwriter with enough individuality, affection and hostility to fill a hundred albums then you’ll do well to check her out.
